Biodiversity strategy for Switzerland

Status, conservation, perspectives

Basis for a national strategy.

(Book available in German or French).

Biodiversity in Switzerland is in a critical state – urgent action is needed. Renowned scientists of the Swiss Biodiversity Forum describe the current state of biodiversity in Switzerland and its value for society. They analyse the loss of biodiversity, its causes and discuss future trends: What are the shortcomings in biodiversity conservation? What kind of solutions will lead to a long-term successful conservation of this vital resource? Numerous photographs and tables complement the text. Text boxes address specific aspects of biodiversity conservation. This comprehensive and yet easy to read book provides an introduction to a gripping issue of up-to-date interest to experts as well as non-experts. The authors put it straight: this is not a pamphlet but a book based on firm knowledge and sound figures. The book contains the scientific base for a comprehensive strategy to preserve biodiversity in Switzerland. It was presented to the public on October 13, 2004. Press documentation is available at

Media Corner > press releases.

On 9 December 2004, 74 members of parliament submitted a postulate to the Swiss Federal Council, demanding a biodiversity strategy for Switzerland. In September 2008, the Swiss Parliament has included the elaboration of a national strategy for biodiversity in the legislative plan 2007-2011.
